Moving from one place to another can often be a grueling process. Whether you are selling your home and moving out of state or simply moving from one place to another, packing up everything you own is a lot of work. With that in mind a great deal of my clients call me to help them declutter as they are preparing to move to make the process a little easier. Why is decluttering your home before you move a good idea? I’m glad you asked!
When you think about how long you have lived in your current home I’m sure you have accumulated many fond memories but one thing you may not realize is that you may have also accumulated a lot of “stuff”. Think about the years you’ve been in your home, the gifts you’ve received (some left unopened), the closets full of clothing (some barely or never worn), the old set of pots and pans you never got rid of after getting a new set… Do you really want to pack all that up if it’s possible you may never use it in your new home either? If you are hiring a moving company you may want to say no! Did you know that many moving companies charge by weight? In other words, the more you take with you the more you will pay to move it all.
One of the great things about decluttering your home prior to packing it all up is that it gives you a chance to go through everything you have to see what you really need and want to keep and what may simply be taking up space. This is also really helpful if you are downsizing as your space may be limited in the new place and you may not even have room for half of what you currently have. Your closets may be smaller, or you may lose some of your storage and taking it all may cause your new place to become disorganized right from the start if you find you have nowhere to put half your belongings.
